Text for the above items :

Last Man Away by Ivan Berryman. (P)

The remarkable Fairey Swordfish served with distinction throughout WWII, despite being nothing short of an anachronism. Its dated appearance belied a solid, workmanlike airframe that provided a stable platform from which to launch torpedoes against enemy shipping, the venerable 'Stringbag' sending a greater tonnage of Axis shipping to the bottom than any other allied aircraft in the Second World War. A Mk.II is shown taking off from HMS Ark Royal early in 1941.

Tirpitz Passing Through Kiel Canal by Ivan Berryman (P)

The mighty Kriegsmarine battleship Tirpitz passes under the iconic Levensau High Bridge over the Kiel Canal.

The Chase, 27th May 1941 by Randall Wilson (P)

HMS King George V and HMS Rodney chase down the crippled German battleship, Bismarck, and within hours they will go into action.

Tribute to William F Dickson by Ivan Berryman. (P)

19th July 1918 - the Tondern raid, the first raid in history carried out from an aircraft carrier. Captain Dickson is shown in his Sopwith Camel 2F.1 departing HMS Furious just after 3am, and along with 5 other aircraft would successfully attack the German Zeppelin sheds at Tondern in Denmark. They destroyed two airships in their hangar, and the entire base was subsequently abandoned. 7 aircraft began the raid : one turned back with engine trouble, three landed in Denmark afterwards while another failed to return to the British fleet. Only Dickson and Captain B Smart ditched in the sea near the British ships and were recovered. For this raid, Dickson was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. He later moved to HMS Revenge and HMS Queen Elizabeth then flew on HMS Argus and was a test pilot at the Royal Aircraft Establishment. In World War Two he helped to plan the Allied invasion of occupied Europe. He remained in the RAF post war, retiring in 1959 as Marshal of the Royal Air Force. He died in 1987.

USS Baltimore and Saratoga in the Pacific by Anthony Saunders. (P)

In February 1944, USS Baltimore and Saratoga make up part of the formidable Task Force 58, forcing their way through the central pacific to attack the Japanese bases in the Marshal Islands in support of Operation Flintlock.

The Arctic Run by Anthony Saunders. (P)

Arctic Convoy. Forcing their way through adverse conditions bordering on the limitations of human endurance, The Allied convoys faced appalling odds of survival in the endeavour to supply raw materials to Russias only ice free port of Murmansk.

USS Tennessee During the Landings at Iwo Jima by Anthony Saunders. (P)

In February 1945, 850 square miles of volcanic rock became the most strategically important island in the South Pacific. From Iwo Jima heavy bombers would be able to raid Japanese cities almost at will. Even with its overwhelming military might, the Americans would have to pay a heavy price for such a seemingly small island.

Evacuation Dunkirk by Randall Wilson (P)

With the harbour under attack, HMS Express casts off having embarked troops of the British Expeditionary force (B.E.F.) Leaving with her are the trawlers, which were part of the small boat armada which played such a major part in the evacuation of Dunkirk.

HMS Thrasher by Ivan Berryman. (P)

A T-Class submarine of the Royal Navy launched in 1940 and commissioned in May 1941, HMS Thrasher famously survived an attack by aircraft in 1942, her crew gaining two Victoria Crosses in the process. Immediately after attacking a supply vessel on 16th February, HMS Thrasher was bombed from the air but escaped unscathed. After resurfacing, two unexploded bombs were discovered within the casing of the submarine. The first was easily removed but the second took a contorted effort in confined spaces - an hour-long combined effort by Lt Roberts and PO Gould literally manhandled the lethal ordnance safely over the side. For actions that likely save the submarine, they were both awarded the Victoria Cross.

The Lusitania by Robert Barbour (P)

Cunard liner RMS Lusitania leaves New York outward bound for Liverpool just before the First World War. Sadly on 7th May 1915 she was torpedoed by the German submarine U-20 and sank within 20 minutes with the loss of 1,198 lives.

Jean Bart by Randall Wilson. (P)

Jean Bart in company with Richelieu loose off salvoes on the gunnery range in the Med.

U-453 by Ivan Berryman. (P)

The Type VIIC U-Boat U-453 began service in June 1941 under the command of Knight's Cross winner Egon-Reiner von Schlippenbach and claimed 10 vessels sunk including the Royal Navy minesweeper HMS Hebe. U-453 was sunk on 21st May 1944 by the destroyers HMS Tenacious, HMS Termagant and HMS Liddesdale off the coast of Italy. She is shown here on one of 17 patrols defending herself from air attack by a Catalina from RAF Coastal Command.

HMS Hermes - Under Leaden Skies by Ivan Berryman. (P)

Laid down as early as June 1944, HMS Hermes (R12) was not commissioned into the Royal Navy until 25th November 1959. This fine ship has enjoyed a long and varied career, perhaps its most notable role being that of flagship to the British Task Force that was sent to liberate the Falkland Islands following the Argentine invasion of 1982. She was decommissioned in 1984 and sold to the Indian Navy, whereupon she was renamed Viraat. Hermes is depicted here in stormy weather in the late 1970s before the Harrier 'ski jump' was added to her bow in readiness for the Falklands Campaign.

The Hunters by Randall Wilson (P)

The mighty German battleships Bismarck and Tirpitz operated together for only 6 hours on the 18th May 1941.

Arctic guardian - USS Washington by Anthony Saunders (P)

In the spring of 1942, USS Washington was the first of Americas fast battleship fleet to participate in combat operations when she was briefly assigned to the Royal Navy. On 28th June 1942, together with HMS Duke of York, HMS Victorious and an accompanying cruiser and destroyer force, she formed part of the distant covering force to convoy PQ17, bound for Russia. In the Pacific later that same year, she became the only modern US battleship to engage an enemy capital ship, sinking the Japanese battlecruiser Kirishima.

Good Morning, Spartan by Robert Barbour (P)

Nimrod MR2P from 201 squadron based at RAF Kinloss, climbs away under full power during NATO exercises off the west coast of Scotland. The Nimrod has just completed simulated depth charge attacks on the fleet submarine HMS Spartan and is returning to Kinloss for breakfast. Spartan turns and heads for the Clyde Submarine Base at Faslane on the Gareloch.

USS Indiana, First Tour of Duty by Anthony Saunders (P)

To increase the strength of the US fleet in the Pacific during the critical early months of the war, USS Indiana went through the Panama Canal. On the 28th of November 1942 USS Indiana joined Rear Admiral Lee's aircraft carrier screening force. For the next 11 months, USS Indiana helped protect USS Enterprise and USS Saratoga, which had been supporting the US invasion on the Solomon Islands. On the 21st of October 1943 USS Indiana went to Pearl Harbor, but after only a couple of weeks left to support forces designated for the invasion of the Gilbert Islands. The battleship protected the carriers which supported the Marines during the bloody fight for Tarawa atoll. Then, in late January 1944, she bombarded Kwajalein for eight days prior to the Marshall Island landings on 1st February 1944. USS Indiana collided with the battleship USS Washington while refuelling destroyers, killing several men. Temporary repairs to her starboard side were made at Majuro and USS Indiana returned to Pearl Harbor on 13th February 1944 for additional repair work. The painting shows USS Indiana with one of the two carriers she protected.

Bucentaure by Ivan Berryman. (P)

Built at Toulon in 1803, Bucentaure was the flagship of Admiral Villeneuve at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805 and the first to be almost completely disabled by a massive broadside from HMS Victory as Nelson broke through the enemy line. Bucentaure was taken as a prize by the British fleet, but was lost in the great storm that followed the battle.

Agamemnon off the Needles by Ivan Berryman. (P)

Considered by Lord Nelson as The finest 64 in the Service - indeed, his favourite ship, HMS Agamemnon was a two-deck third rate warship, lighter and faster than most 74s. Launched at Bucklers Hard in 1781, she saw action in many great battles, among them the Battle of Ushant, the Battle of Copenhagen and Trafalgar, by which time she was a veteran of 24 years service.

Tribute to Midget Submarine HMS XE-3 by Ivan Berryman. (P)

The midget submarine HMS XE-3 made a successful attack on the Japanese cruiser Takao in Johore Strait, Singapore on 31st July 1943. Having evaded anti-submarine defences to reach their target, the Commander Ian Fraser and his diver James Magennis are shown preparing to attach limpet mines to the cruiser. Fraser then managed with great skill to position the main explosives directly under the ship before retreating back through the defended waters to safety. Both were awarded the Victoria Cross for their actions that day.

HMS Illustrious and HMS Kenya at Devonport by Ivan Berryman (P)

HMS Illustrious slips quietly away from the docks at Devonport, Plymouth with the Fiji class cruiser in the middle distance, 1941.
