The destroyer HMS Kelly passes close to the old carrier HMS Eagle as she escorts a convoy in the Mediterranean early in 1941.


HMS Victorious by Ivan Berryman.

Completed in May 1941, HMS Victorious had been in commission just nine days when her pilots encountered and attacked the Bismarck. She is seen here in August 1942 with HMS Eagle astern of her.

The Battle ship HMS Barham in company with the aircraft carrier HMS Eagle between the two World Wars. Both fell victim to German U-Boats during World War Two.

A Fairey Swordfish launches from the Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Eagle in 1939. HMS Eagle would later fall victim to German U-boat U-73 on 11th August 1942.

HMS Eagle

Launched : 8th June 1918
HMS Eagle was built at Clydebank, and was launched on the 8th of June 1918, a former Battleship construction suspended in 1914. during world war two HMS Eagle served off China in 1939, East Indies 1939 - 1940, Mediterranean in 1940 - 1941. and in the South Atlantic 1941 - 1942 and Force H in 1942, she was sunk by U-73, North of Algiers on the 11th August 1942. Capable of carrying 40 planes she was originally destined to be a battleship for Chile but was bought back and altered. The crane which can be seen was used to hoist aircraft from the hangars onto the flight deck. Displacement: 22,600 tons. Speed: 23 knots. Armament: twelve 6 ins guns, four 4 ins AA guns, four 3 pdr guns and six 21in torpedo tubes. Complement: 950.

Sunk 11th August 1942.
